ICC Article 36, Nicole Jobin,
An amazing person who is multi talented! Ms. Jobin is one of the friendliest people you can meet in the business. She has the kind hearted personality that people gravitate to. She is doing many wonderful things for the community as well. Everyone I know of has nothing but great things to say about Her. She is a talented A creator who listens to what people have to say and shares knowledge with them as well. She is a fan, a go getter and an educator all in one. I have seen Her in action and sat on the same panel boards with her, She is incredibly well versed in the history of comics and it’s meaning and purpose. Nicole brings Her “A” game each time, which is probably why she is often requested as a repeat guest at various cons, Here is a little bit more about her:
“X-men was my first introduction into comic characters. I watched every 90s X-men cartoon. But I wasn’t really a comic fan until I because a teacher. I grew up in Michigan and I knew I was going to be a teacher at an early age. However, when I started teaching in Las Vegas 2000 mile away from home in a class full of ESOL kids, I had my work cut out for me! I had to find a way that the students could be engaged and want to read. I found comics and had them on my shelf. Then I used a form of reader with high interest articles with pictures illustrated to go along with the sections.
After moving to Florida, I got the chance to really use a comic to teach and read with my kids. 6th graders read and discussed really in depth ideas about X-Men: God Loves Man Kills. We had discussions about racism and civil rights that would never have happen with just reading about Martin Luther King. I took my proverbial show on the road and started talking to rooms of small groups of people with shared ideas of using comics in classrooms to reach readers. I have been interviewed by ABC action news and was highlighted in the Polk Education newsletter. I am still trying to gain momentum in the movement while working full- time as a teacher/ Literacy coach and trying to earn my Specialist in Reading and Literacy degree. ”
